Originally occupied in the 9th century by the Vikings, the charming town of Honfleur has attracted artists for many years, with masterpieces housed in its museums and art galleries. Under the guidance of Eugène Boudin, a young Claude Monet and his friend Alfred Sisley began studying light effects and painting landscapes outdoors, rather than from memory, trailblazing for artists of the future.

The North Sea Canal (or Noordzeekanaal) is Amsterdam’s direct link to the North Sea and is one of the country’s busiest and most important shipping lanes. Despite its industrial importance, there’s a lot more to this winding waterway than just container ships. Along the banks of the 16-mile-long canal – from the mouth at Ijmuiden, to the end in Amsterdam – there are an abundance interesting fortifications from World War Two, huge power plants, beaches and nature reserves.

Known as Denmark’s ‘Gateway to the North Sea,’ it offers both cultural delights and striking natural beauty right on its doorstep. The city centre is a short distance from the harbour, with its streets lined with shops, cafés and museums. One of Esbjerg’s best-known landmarks is the Man Meets the Sea sculpture of four large white figures overlooking the North Sea. Elsewhere, the Fisheries and Maritime Museum tells stories of seafaring and offshore oil exploration, while the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Site, Wadden Sea National Park, is home to diverse birdlife and impressive tidal landscapes.
